CTLLS Level 4 - Certificate to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector

This qualification satisfies the government requirement for teachers, tutors and trainers in an Associate Teacher role to hold the Level 4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.
Associate teachers normally teach in one or more of the following ways: from pre prepared packs, on a one to one basis, on short programmes, or on programmes in one subject, at one level, for one type of learner.
On completion of the certificate learners will be able to show an understanding of the teaching and learning process and different methods of initial assessment, establish and maintain an inclusive learning environment, plan learning sessions, use appropriate delivery methods, assess and give feedback to learners and evaluate their own practice.
The course is run in two 5 days blocks with workshops and observed teaching totalling over two months.
Objectives
Learners who complete the requirements for this certificate will be able to:
- Know how to carry out initial assessment with learners to inform planning
- Know theories of teaching and learning
- Prepare a scheme of work
- Prepare session plans to meet individual needs of learners.
- Plan teaching sessions
- Negotiate individual learning plans with learners
- Establish and maintain a learning environment appropriate to area of expertise and learner cohort
- Identify key aspects of relevant current legislative requirements
- Establish ground rules that underpin appropriate behaviour and respect for others
- Select appropriate materials from the range available and understand how to develop their own materials
- Deliver session plans to meet the individual needs of learners
- Apply appropriate teaching methods to groups of learners
- Apply appropriate teaching and learning strategies which take account of individual learner need
- Ensure that learners have an awareness of the area of specialism in context eg its application and contribution to the economy/society
- Facilitate opportunities for learners to use peer and/or self assessment
- Give constructive feedback to learners
- Facilitate opportunities for learner feedback
- Use a range of assessment activities which produce valid, reliable and sufficient evidence
- Assess learner performance
- Monitor learner progress
- Keep accurate records of learner progress
- Contribute to organisational quality procedures
- Identify and refer learners on to sources of general and current education, training and/or career opportunities, as appropriate
- Signpost and/or refer learners on to specialist services, as necessary
- Evaluate own practice
- Collaborate with others to improve own performance
- Understand how to adapt approaches to deliver a more extensive curriculum
- Engage in continuing professional development
Centres need to ensure that the content, structure and delivery of training is designed to enable trainee teachers to meet these objectives during their training.
